Vega One Product Review

A product that I can’t get enough of and fully support is the topic for this post.

I’ve been meaning to write up a post about Vega Plant-Based Nutrition for quite some time now, but my writers block has been getting the best of me (does this happen to all bloggers?)

Over the past 6 months, I’ve been playing around with my diet to try and find what works best for my body. Whether it be an omnivore type diet, vegetarian, vegan – I was open to experimentation, and still am. I naturally have moved away from eating all meats (except for the occasional free-range/organic/antibiotic free bit). I’ve also started to shy away from much dairy, unless it’s all natural as well. I do feel strongly about these choices, but take into account that I live in a society that eats anything and everything. I am only human, and it’s useless to pick a title for my dietary habits because they are always changing. I may not fall under the label of veg/vegan etc. but I do now call myself an informed consumer who makes a conscious effort to know what’s going in to my body.

Ever since I’ve made these changes in my diet, I’ve noticed a few things…

  • Ensuring that I have enough protein in a day can be HARD (especially when avoiding meat/dairy and teaching exercise classes 2x/day)
  • I don’t miss meat, at all…
  • Dairy + Sugar upsets my stomach
  • I feel my best when I eat a fruit and vegetable based diet
  • I am not bloated/cramped/gassy when I eat clean/raw foods

And much more, but those are a few that came to mind.

Without diving too far into my personal eating habits today, I’m really here to express my thankfulness for a 100% natural plant-based protein powder called Vega.

They have so graciously sent me a whole whack of their new (and old) products, and I am happy to endorse them because I use these products myself in everyday, busy/crazy/chaotic  life.

(I am not being compensated to write this post – all opinions are my own from personal experiences)

What I love about their products is that they have abseloutly nothing to hide. No fillers, no chemicals, no artificial colours or flavours. These products are built for the athlete, but usable by ANYONE. One scoop of their Nutritional Shake provides you with 50% of your daily vitamins and minerals (covering MANY key nutrients that you may otherwise be lacking through your diet), and their products can help you achieve the energy levels necessary for optimal sports performance (or even just for feeling better in your every day life)

That being said, as a student studying Holistic Nutrition – I always look to FOOD as my first source of daily nutrients. Again though, I am only human and often lack the time to whip up the type of nutrient rich meals that I need to teach a high energy spin class. These shakes are especially good to me at 6a.m. when I can barely even think about cooking breakkie. So, shake it is…

(Pictured above: Vega One All-in-one Nutritional Shake in Berry flavour)

A scoop of this stuff offers you…

  1. 15 grams of protein (the same as 2.7 eggs)
  2. 1.5 grams of Omega-3 (same as 2.3 servings of salmon)
  3. 1 billion Probiotics (same as 1 cup of yogurt)
  4. 6 grams of Fiber
  5. 3 servings of Greens (same as 3 servings of veggies)
  6. 2.7 cups of Antioxidants (same as 2.7 cups of blueberries)
  7. 50% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamins & Minerals

Not bad, huh?

blog 055

All kinds that I have tried have tasted great. I normally don’t like ‘fake’ flavours, so I was hesitant to try these ones – but the natural flavoring is bang-on. Not to sweet, just subtle enough to be enjoyed.

Call me boring though, I¬† still like the ‘Natural’ Nutritional Shake the best. The rich yet mild taste goes perfectly into a banana + kale smoothie.

Protein powders are not for everyone, so do your research before you go drop $ on a tub of this.

Those of you with soy/gluten/dairy/sugar allergies – not to worry… Vega One is free of all of them. You’re good to go!

Other goodies that you should try from VEGA!…blog 069

Sacha Inchi Seeds.

Never heard of them? Well listen up!

These bad boys are the richest plant-based source of Omega-3’s on the planet! What a perfect healthy indulgence. They come in Karmalized, Natural or Choc-o-lot flavours.

blog 058

Vibrancy Bars.

A combo of raw and sprouted ingredients and 180 calories, these make a great on the go snack. In fact, I chowed down on Chocolate Decadence one today after my workout.

blog 059

Maca Chocolate.

Eat it sparingly, and enjoy it. Yes, there are health benefits to eating this organic chocolate bar.

Maca is a root plant native to the Andean mountains which has a whole lotta benefits which I won’t even try to explain better than Vega does, right here.

blog 051

Truth be told, I could write a whole lot more – but I know you’ve heard enough for one blog post!

If you have any questions, you can always send me an e-mail or respond to this post in the ‘comments’ section =) I love hearing from you guys.

If you’re interested in Vega products, check out their website

In addition, you can explore Brendan Braziers (the creative mind behind Vega) ‘Thrive Forward” program which introduces you to plant-based eating, and cleaning up your diet. Heck, even if you’re not interested in the program it’s still a pretty website with some fabulous recipes.

Have you tried Vega products? Which are your favourite?

vegan cookies + 30 minute treadmill workout

Happy Tuesday everyone!

I’ve got two things for you today. Two REALLY awesome things!

They are; a RECIPE + a Treadmill Workout for you to do next time you’re at the gym (especially if you find yourself lacking motivation some days, like me)…

I’ll start with the fun stuff (no, not the treadmill workout …)

This recipe was taken and adapted from Oh She Glows recipe for ‘The Ultimate Vegan Oatmeal Raisin Cookie”

004

Yes it’s true that VEGAN does not always equate to HEALTHY. So health nuts beware… However; this recipe is fabulous if you want to do some baking with ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.

These cookies were soft, gooey, sweet and impossibly delicious!

005

You could add in various nuts, or substitute the raisins for dried cranberries/chocolate chips if you so desired! Instead of only using walnuts like the original recipe did, I threw in almonds as well.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 3/4 cup almonds
  • 2 cups regular oats, divided
  • 3/4 cup Gluten-Free Flour Blend
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar (feel free to use substitutes here)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp almond milk
  • 3.5 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup raisins

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. Coarsely grind the walnuts in a food processor
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, half of the oats and sugar
    001
  4. Add these dry ingredients to the food processor – blend with walnuts
  5. Soften the coconut oil in the microwave – mix in the maple syrup, almond milk and vanilla
  6. Add the wet mix to the food processor as well, mix until everything is combined!
  7. Remove contents from food processor, into a big bowl
  8. Add in the remaining oats, and the raisins
  9. Roll the dough into little balls and place on the cookie sheet
  10. Flatten with a fork, and bake for 10 minutes
  11. Let the cookies sit for 2 minutes, transfer to a wire cooling rack – and VOILA!

006

ENJOY with a warm cup of tea or coffee, and you’re happy!

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

After you indulge in too many of these cookies, you’re going to want to try this super sweaty workout.

It’s interval-based, so there’s varying periods of high-intensity sprints alternated with some light jogging.

The 30 minutes FLEW by for me, and I hope that happens to you as well! It’s a great workout to beat the gym-blues when you get bored with your usual workouts.

Try these out! Both the recipe and workout!

do it with an INTENTION

Take a moment and answer some of these questions.

  1. Why do you workout? Do you love the sport you play? Is it the only time that you get to catch up with your best friend? Is it to live a better life?

  2. If someone told you that working out has been scientifically proven not to make you lose weight or gain muscle, would you still do it?

  3. How does working out make you feel? Like you got run over by a bus (either in a good or a bad way), or like you’re on a ‘high‘ that nobody can bring you down from ?

(A conversation that I had after work this morning sparked these thoughts in my head).

I then had to question myself, “Why do I workout!?” (Not that I don’t know the answers – but it had been a while since a thought like this crossed my mind)

The gym that I work at is predominately a Muay Thai Training Facility. The owner wants everyone walking in that door to become a champion. Whether they’re old or young, fit or obese, a CEO or a retail store employeethey will become champions. So, there you have it – people walking through the door, no matter who they are, are there to become champions in their own life – inside and outside of training. That’s the kind of INTENT that keeps them coming back day after day after day. After talking to him about this, I too now want to become a champion!

Besides the spelling error in this quote, I like it.

Bringing more intent to my workouts will help me focus on why I’m really there – and why I devote so much time to all things fitness. I already know that I love it, but there are many many other reasons to keep me coming back to spinning, running, group fitness classes, outdoor activity, etc.

Finding those reasons and reminding yourself why right before a workout will keep you on track and keep you coming back for more by knowing that there’s purpose in your routine.

you’ve never seen a breakfast like this.

Can I interest you in some photos of my breakfast on Saturday morning?

If my blog were Twitter, I would #hashtag the following…

  • Bangcakes (somewhat like pancakes I would say)
  • Caramelized Bananas
  • Coconut Cream
  • Pineapple
  • Peanut Brittle
  • Coriander

Seriously, this was no joke. All of this goodness on one plate in front of me!

Healthy, no. Okay to have once in a while because it was food at its finest, YES! Life is too short to wish away meals like this.

I wonder how this would turn out if you made it at home…

blog 010

Pinch me, I must be dreaming this photo up!

blog 011

Dave’s breakfast also gets an A+…

blog 013

Thankfully, there was some working out involved in the weekend as well.

A circuit at the gym on Friday…

  • Warm Up: 30 Jumping Jacks, 30 Burpees, 30 more J.J
  • 24 alternating Lunges with Bicep Curls (8 pound weights)
  • 20 Squat Jumps
  • 2 x 45 Second Planks
  • 10 Box Jumps
  • 24 Reverse Lunges with Bicep Curls
  • 50 Mountain Climbers
*If you’re unsure of what any of these exercises are, leave me a comment here

Repeat 2 or 3x, as you like!

Then, 15 minutes of cardio to finish it off (I did treadmill).

Today was a Lactic Threshold Test, so I was able to find out my VO2 MAX – I will share more about this later!

How was your weekend?
