This week, I’m sitting down with Jesse Chappus, who is the host of a top ranked Health Podcast called The Ultimate Health Podcast.

It was formerly co-hosted with his wife, Marni Wasserman (who you might recognize from tuning into her top podcast, The Ultimate Baby Podcast)

When you look at how long Jesse Chappus has been podcasting for, it’s safe to say he is a podcasting O.G.

He started his first show almost a decade ago, and in 2014 he launched his current chart topping podcast, The Ultimate Health Podcast.

To date, the show has collected over 16 million downloads and their roster of guest interviews in the health and wellness space would make any health nut drool.

In this episode, rather than pick Jesse’s brain about health, we’re pulling the curtains back on how The Ultimate Health Podcast became a global podcast sensation.

We’ll dive into…

  1. Secrets of his chart topping podcast

  2. The methods he uses for pitching world class guests to come on the show

  3. How they partner and land top quality sponsors & the journey of monetizing the show

    AND SO MUCH MORE

Enjoy this episode with Jesse Chappus.

Want to take a peek at my “Prep Notes” for the show?

These are totally unedited, and give you an idea of what I do to get ready for the interview.

Dr. Jesse Chappus,

Welcome to the Visionary Life Podcast.

Though you and I have only been connected for a few months,

I’ve known your wife Marni for almost a decade, as we used to cross paths in the vegan & plant-based circles in Toronto.

That feels like an eternity ago.

Today, you are the host of one of the most successful and long standing Health Podcasts called The Ultimate Health Podcast. Something you started with Marni all the way back in 2014, which has now recorded almost 400 episodes!

You’ve spoken with some of my faves including Kamal Ravikant, Molly Sims, Gabby Reese, Michael Hyatt, Dr. Will Cole, Dave Asprey… and so many more incredible individuals.

I can’t wait to dive into all things Ultimate Health & Ultimate Business with you today, Jesse.

Welcome!

To begin, I want to zoom the lens back a bit.

You weren’t always a podcaster, you actually spent many years running your own clinic as a Chiropractor. Can you give us a brief snapshot of that chapter of your life?

  • What were some of the biggest challenges of operating a brick & mortar clinic

  • Describe some of the most rewarding or most memorable moments

  • At some point, you must have decided to close the clinic & pursuit of impacting even more people – can you tell us about how you came to that decision?

  • Were you clear on what was next? I know that focus is something you’re quite passionate about, did you feel that lazer focus on the next chapter?

The Creation of The Ultimate Health Podcast

  • How much did you know about Podcasting at the time you decided to create your own show, this was back in 2013 / 2014 when podcasting wasn’t yet a “household name”

  • Did you have any idea if podcasting could be monetized or create income for yourself?

  • Today, the show has over 16 Million+ downloads, but I think it’s important to remind our listeners that you started with Zero Downloads!

    • To what do you attribute some of the early success of the show, before you built a cult following?

    • Why did your listeners love tuning into UHP?

    • Was there a tipping point, a point at which your consistent actions caused a massive spike in downloads? If so, can you pinpoint what you did that really worked in scaling the show?

  • What’s been the most rewarding part of creating & producing the show?

  • Any unforeseen challenges?

  • How do you continue to take your listeners’ health to the next level beyond weekly interviews – are there any other main avenues for connecting with your listeners and sharing your wisdom?

Behind the Scenes

  • Running a podcast requires a tone of work (not only are you recording, but you’re prepping, managing sponsors, editing, show notes, emails, social, ec.) –  do you have any help or do you outsource any of the workload?

  • When you want to get in touch with a high profile guest, how do you ensure that your pitch lands in the right hands? Any tips on pitching guests?

  • You’ve successfully turned your podcast into a full time income — is that primarily through sponsorships?

    • How do you put a price on an ad. Is it based on industry standard or business goals?

    • Are you reaching out to brands or do they reach out to you?

    • How do you discern who to work with & who not to

  • Let’s talk about your preparation process for the show – are you someone who goes down the rabbit role to prepare in depth, or do you like to have more casual, unscripted conversations?

    • What does your preparation process look like?

    • What’s your secret sauce for executing a flawless interview?

Growth of the show

  • I’m sure you get asked all of the time, but do you have any dream guests that you haven’t yet had a chance to sit down with

  • Recently, you started sharing the show on YouTube – why did you decide to add video to your production

  • Where do you want to take this? Where do you want to go?

  • Something you’re always doing is looking for ways to improve the show by 1%

    • What does this mean

    • Tell us some changes you’ve made recently to improve by 1%

What does ultimate health look like for you…

  • Ultimate diet

  • Ultimate movement routine

  • Ultimate brain function

  • Ultimate work-life balance

Now, let’s recap 3 visionary takeaways from this episode…

  1. When it comes to launching a podcast, make sure that monetization isn’t the ONLY goal.

There’s so much heart and soul that needs to go into a podcast and monetization is more of a byproduct, then an initial consideration. It took UHP many years to get their roster of sponsors, and it’s worth noting that they didn’t rush the process.

  2. Quality content that excites you is the most important factor in producing a Top Ranked Podcast!

If you’re not excited about the product, your followers won’t be either. Make sure you invest your time producing something you love and look forward to nurturing.

  3. If you’re feeling bored, uninspired or like you’ve hit a wall in your life, try to follow your curiosity and notice where you’re spending most of your free time.

If you’re constantly watching YouTube videos about crafting or you read all the literature about Keto Diets – there’s something there for you to explore.

This week, I’m sitting down with Dr. Stephanie Estima, who is a total visionary in the field of women’s health.

Over the past year, not only have I had the privilege of getting to know Dr. Stephanie on a personal level – but I’ve watched her from the sidelines, as she has followed her heart in getting more visible & becoming the voice for women.

She’s the host of a Top Health podcast called Better! With Dr. Stephanie, the creator of a very successful online health program for women, and now she is also an author!

Dr. Stephanie Estima recently released her 1st book called The Betty Body: A Geeky Goddess’ Guide to Intuitive Eating, Balanced Hormones, and Transformative Sex.

Did you pick up a copy, yet?

It’s safe to say you’re going to be wildly inspired after listening to her journey.

On today’s episode, we are talking about better business, better focus, better confidence, better resilience, better metabolic health as business owners and sooo much more.

Better is Dr. Stephanie’s favourite word so if you’re someone who wants to be better, get ready to take notes!

And before we cut to the conversation, I want to encourage you to check out Dr. Stephanie’s brand new book, The Betty Body.

Her researched, but relatable approach to teaching women how to feel incredible their bodies is unlike any health book I’ve ever read before.

You can pick up a copy on Amazon OR at www.hellobetty.club

WANT TO PEEK IN ON MY PREP NOTES FOR THIS SHOW?

In preparation for this show, I figured I would scroll the archives of my emails to see when it was that I first met you. I was transported back to 2013 when I worked for Loblaw’s on their Community Development Team.

I have various documents that mention your services, your clinic at the time, and I remember my colleague sharing that she wanted to add you to our roster of Referable Practitioners in The King West Area of Toronto —

This also reminded me just how much can change in the span of 8 years! For you, for me, for all of us…

Can you take us back to your days running your Toronto Clinic, The Health Loft…

  • Did you always know that you wanted to run your own business?

  • What were some of the biggest challenges of operating a brick & mortar

  • Describe some of the most rewarding or most memorable moments

  • At some point, you must have had a lightbulb moment that your impact could be scaled in an even bigger way online – do you remember when you knew it was time to close the clinic in pursuit of helping even more people?

What an incredible past 12 months you’ve had…

Your podcast Better! With Dr. Stephanie regularly ranks Top 10 on the Alternative Health Charts, you’ve been working with 100’s of women inside of The Estima Diet, and you also wrote (& are currently launching) your brand new book, The Betty Body.

  • Let’s start with the Podcast…

    • Did you come up against any resistance in sharing your voice on such a large-scale global platform & how did you work to overcome that hesitation to open up

    • Why do you think your podcast resonates with so many women?

    • I’ve heard you mention that you want to be the Female Tim Ferriss, that’s a big and bold goal (I love it) — is there anything else you hope to accomplish with the show (ex: lead generation, awareness, healthier more empowered women)

  • Talk about The Betty Body

    • First, can you take us behind the scenes of the book writing process? How was your experience?

    • How long has this book been brewing in your mind?

    • Who is this book perfect for?

    • What is a “Betty Body”

    • For our listeners who ALSO want to write a book one day – could you share a few of the earlier dominos that needed to fall before feeling confident in your abilities as an author? Ex: what did you do in the past decade to prepare you to put your own frameworks into the world

Future Growth

  • How do you balance “thinking what to do next in what you’re already doing” vs. “painting a picture for 5 or 10 years from now”

  • Where do you want to take this? Where do you want to go?

  • What drives you to create for your Betties each day

  • When you feel stuck, unmotivated or stagnant – how do you reset?

High Performance as a Female Entrepreneur

  • What have you figured out lately about running a business as a High Performing Woman, that has shifted things for the better

  • In your podcast, you say that you’re constantly asking “What are the simplest things I can do today, to get better tomorrow?”

  • For all the female business owners listening, let’s share some tips on how they can get better starting today…

    • Better Metabolic Health

    • Better Brain / Clarity

    • Better Relationships

    • Better Eating

    • Better Training

    • Better Routines & Rituals

    • Better Business

What are 3 simple things you are doing today, to get better tomorrow?

LET’S RECAP 3 VISIONARY TAKEAWAYS FROM OUR CONVERSATION:

A few things I want to double tap on…

  1. The journey of Ending or Closing a Chapter with Integrity

Whether it’s closing the clinic like Dr. Stephanie described, ending a relationship or quitting a job… make sure to do it with integrity, so that you’re proud when you retell the story. Leave on a high note, or as the old expression goes, “never burn bridges.”

  2. Second, is the secret to Better business really to “stop trying to be like everyone else?”

I agree with Dr. Stephanie on this one, and really believe it is.

You can hear how fired up I get when it comes to not changing who you are, but becoming more of who you are. Business is self expression, afterall. The sooner you can fully self express, the sooner your business will be more fun and profitable.

  3. Finally, let’s talk about Cold Therapy!

Who’s coming over for a Polar Bear Dip?

I just moved to a small town and our new place backs onto the river, so I’ve done a few Polar Bear Dips in the ice cold water.

Dr. Stephanie loves the power of cold therapy on our metabolic health, and it’s something so simple (& affordable) that we can do if we live in cold climates. It was actually one of my January goals to do 1 per week!

I always picture her sipping her morning espresso on her front porch until she is shivering, something simple she does to practice daily cold therapy.

Today, we’re talking about mischief makers, propagandists, con artists, boundary breakers & hype artists.

Sounds pretty juicy, eh?

Our guest of the show is Michael F Schein who has spent the better part of the past 5 years studying all things HYPE.

Yepp, you heard that right!

Michael wants you to know that if you are a business owner, entrepreneur, executive, artist, activist, or thinker who is trying to make the world a better place, it is your moral imperative to learn how to harness raw emotion and irrational thinking to your benefit.

He wants you to understand how people make decisions, why they really get excited, and why they really choose to follow some people over others.

In order to do so, Michael has followed the Hype Experts to find out the commonalities & to reverse engineer how they do what they do.

Not only did I love recording this episode for all of you visionaries, but I deeply appreciated Michael’s perspective on all things marketing & brand building.

Our philosophies are completely in line and I love Michael’s take on standing out in a crowd.

If you want to learn about Ethical Hype & how to use it to grow your business, this is the episode for you! Enjoy this conversation with Michael F Shine.

Oh and you’ll most certainly want to get a copy of his brand new book The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets from the World’s Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers which is now available.

Want to peek at my Podcast Show Prep Notes?

First, I want to go back to your mid-thirties…

With a new baby at home, you quit your cushy corporate job (where you say you were seduced by stability) to pursue a full time career in freelance writing, which proved to be off to a tough start. Month over month, you weren’t reaching your income goals

Then, one day while walking to the subway, you remembered a stunt from your past when you were in a band, when you littered the streets with posters that said ‘Dave Matthews Must Die”.

  • Take us back to those days and why you created those posters

  • Looking back on that chapter of your life, what did you learn in promoting and selling out concerts & shows

  • To get your freelance career going you tried letting good work speak for itself, hustling hard, and implementing sales funnels… but none of those things were getting you business. This is when you began to wonder whether there was anything in the strategies and techniques of these more unconventional operators (like propagandists, cult leaders, etc.) that you could apply without losing my soul in the process.”…

The Gary Vee Article

You pressed publish on an article that took a stance against Gary Vaynerchuck, who constantly tells aspiring entrepreneurs that the only way to succeed is to spend the majority of every day talking about yourself online.

Within an hour of posting the article, Gary Vaynerchuk had responded and his fans reacted with a litany of personal attacks on you.

  • I think we all get a little tense imagining ourselves in that position, essentially wanting to curl up in a hole in and die after we press publish on something we believe in, yet that we know will be met with a whole lot of resistance…   What were you feeling at that moment?

  • One of the strategies that you’ve identified as a way to garner Hype is to “pick fights and make enemies.” Identify a person or a status quo idea and position in opposition to it – Why does this strategy work?

    • Ex: Why Joe Rogan Got Ripped Off

    • Ex: Taking a stance against ClickFunnels and Expensive Facebook Ads

  • How can we think about implementing it or putting it into practice in our own businesses

  • What were some of the outcomes of taking that bold stance and publishing that piece on Gary Vee: positive and negative?

  • Was this how you got Fired from Forbes?

HYPE

You say…. If you are a business owner, entrepreneur, executive, artist, activist, or thinker who can honestly say that you are trying to make the world a better place, it is your moral imperative to learn how to harness raw emotion and irrational thinking to your benefit. You must come to understand how people really make decisions, why they really get excited, and why they really choose to follow some people over others. Then you must use your understanding of these principles for good. To make this happen, study the mischief makers, the propagandists, the con artists, the boundary breakers, the hype artists. Find the commonalities. Reverse engineer how they do what they do.

  • Can you give us an example of someone who is a Modern Day Hype Artist

  • The word “Hype” can be associated with the promotion of something that doesn’t live up to a standard, but in your work you study The Ethical Use of Hype. Explain more of what that is.

  • It sounds like without hype, good ideas often go unnoticed.

  • Is it okay to use hype to self-promote?

  • If we’re not yet comfortable promoting ourselves, how can we use the Mini-Oprah or Piggyback Principle to generate hype?

Let’s talk about one of the Hype Strategies, “Perfect for Your Packaging”

  • Can you give us an example of how your branding and our overall “look”can actually be a source of hype (aka How You Dress on Stage)

  • Coming up with a name for your community members (aka my friend Dr. Stephanie calls her Better! Podcast Listeners Betties, and I call my Visionary Life Community Visionaries). Why is this something to consider?

Marketing Tips.

  • For someone who is in their first few years of business, and hasn’t quite found their voice or their strong position yet, what advice would you offer them for beginning to generate Hype

  • Think outside the box, You give an example of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Rather than going from door to door to raise money for a charity, take inspiration from the ALS ice bucket challenge, which raised $115 million by calling on people to post videos on social media of their friends and family dumping buckets of ice on their heads. How do you stay inspired and continue to generate unique ideas to build Hype.

Your new book – The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets from the World’s Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers

  • It’s already ranked #70 in the Business Category and it doesn’t launch for a couple more weeks

  • I love that your book pulls the curtains back on “why we make decisions like we do”… like why Bacon + Eggs has become a “go to breakfast” when we all know that’s NOT the most advantageous morning food for energy, weight maintenance & overall health. It’s good for business owners and people curious about psychology of decision making

  • The most brilliant part of your book is that after you learn one of the Hype Secrets, you give the reader a list of ways to “put it into practice”

LET’S RECAP 3 VISIONARY TAKEAWAYS FROM OUR CONVERSATION:

  1. First, it’s important to determine a point of view held by the main practitioners of your industry, something often regarded as gospel, and then see if you believe any different

(ex. Everyone says you need to do Facebook Ads to have a successful marketing strategy, but I disagree). Michael gained much attention when he shared his article titled “Why Gary Vaynerchuk is Flat Out Wrong” since it contradicted what everyone else said. That was the tipping point of his career!

  2. It’s scary to stand out, so don’t worry if this isn’t coming easy in your business, yet.

Just like how Michael felt terrified to publish his opinion piece on Gary Vaynerchuk, there’s likely some area of your business that you’re resisting rising up in right now.

  3. Hype isn’t a bad thing!

Be your own hype artist or you risk having your work unseen by the masses. Hype gets you noticed and shouldn’t always have a negative connotation!

On today’s show I am sitting down with Jenn Pike, who is a Hormone Nutritionist, Author & Brilliant Entrepreneur.

I have to admit, I didn’t know a lot about Jenn and her work before our conversation, but I am sitting here completely blown away by how brilliant and genuine this woman is. Many of you have been patiently awaiting this episode, and now I know why. Jenn is a true visionary.

In addition to opening up about her many successes as a business owner of over 15 years, Jenn is also pulling back the curtains to share the challenges and tougher moments that brought her to where she is today.

  • Opening & ultimately selling her brick and mortar Pilates studio,

  • Reaching burnout multiple times,

  • & failing to give her family her best energy…

This is just SOME of the realness that Jenn and I are sharing in today’s conversation.

If you don’t know Jenn, she is…

  • A Best-Selling Author of The Simplicity Project

She’s also a Holistic Expert for Breakfast Television, Global, CHCH, Rogers TV and she writes columns for STRONG Fitness Magazine, iRun magazine, Savvy Mom and contributes to Inside Fitness Magazine, The Toronto Star and Sun.

3 VISIONARY TAKEAWAYS FROM OUR CONVERSATION:

  1. Before we started recording, Jenn and I were talking about “the dips” that business owners so often experience, but don’t always share. You know, those low moments in a day (which occur almost everyday in my workday if I am being honest) when you just feel like “it’s not working”.

Yes, even Jenn has those moments! She talks about a technique she uses, which is simply tapping in & taking a pause. Removing the earbuds, taking some deep breaths, and asking “why isn’t this working”.

This is something I am going to implement immediately, as I find that I tend to experience moments like this at least a few times per week!

  2. Second, I loved her perspective on closing her studio and how she sees it as a completion and not a failure.

I think it’s so important for all of us to adopt this mindset shift when one chapter of our life closes and another opens. It’s not failure, it’s not something to regret, it’s simply a completion that is preparing you for what’s next.

  3. Finally, I appreciate how Jenn is transparent about the challenges that come alongside opening a Brick & Mortar studio.

She said it was the hardest and most rewarding 5 years of her life, while she owned and operated her fitness studio. When she shared how tough it was in terms of finances, managing her team, dealing with landlords… it reminded me that it’s so important to support our brick & mortar shop owners when possible.

They make our communities what they are, add vibrancy to our communities, and they deserve to be celebrated.
